Domain of One’s Own (UMW Domains), Year: Late 2016-Present
Tools: WordPress (custom theme, custom page template, custom plugin), CSS
Domain of One’s Own (DoOO) is a project at the University of Mary Washington managed by the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies (DTLT). The DoOO project allows UMW students, faculty, and staff to register their own domain name and associate it with a hosted web space, free of charge while at UMW. With their Domain and corresponding web space, users will have the opportunity and flexibility to design and create a meaningful and vibrant digital presence. In December of 2016, the Digital Ocean droplet that the DoOO was on, was accidentally deleted. In turn, everything was lost except for some page templates that have important account content information for users, which can be recreated with a custom plugin my colleague, Martha Burtis, and I built to allow shortcodes to call the custom page templates. We rebuilt the site together in four hours one afternoon. I saw this as an opportunity to redesign and clean up the website. Many of the features on the old site had broken (the screenshot is from a while ago and from the Internet Archive Wayback Machine), and since we needed to get the site back up and running for users, I decided to leave any broken features off of the site until we could return to them, and if we wanted to return to them. The new site is very simple and has all of the information the users need. Below are some screenshots of the design of the DoOO site. Two of the screenshots for pages are internal pages, the Migration Information page, and the cPanel page. The cPanel page is a custom page template that has cPanel embedded on the page and takes up the entirety of the page.
